A Software Engineering Approach to the Development of Computer-Based Patient Record Systems

The development of a Computer-Based Patient Record system (CPR) should be ruled by the use of methods created by Software Engineering (SE), which allows a better organization for the development and testing process, as well as an improved quality of the end product. This paper briefly describes the subject of SE, its methods, tools and paradigms, emphasizing its use in the development of CPR. We discuss process management, metrics, estimates and viability studies, analysis, project, coding, tests and maintenance, and explain the main methods to be used, including C.A.S.E. tools. Finally, comments are made concerning the assurance of software quality. The aim of this paper is to attract the attention of the community which develops solutions in the healthcare area to the importance of SE in the development of CPRs.
