A MICROCOMPUTER-BASED PUBLIC INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR HOSPITALS, USING SPEECH SYNTHESIS

The DELPHOS I system is a speech-synthesis program which provides audible information about the contents of a relational database. It has been used to develop a public information system to visitors of a hospital, about the latest medical bulletin of interned patients. Its main characteristics are: 1) can be easily used by health professionals to digitize and record high-quality, natural speech utterances in any language; forming a dictionary o commonly used words and phrases; 2) presents formatted audible reports to users, upon their identification by a digital access plastic card; 3) uses inexpensive, standard hardware (IBM PC compatibles, a A/D and D/A converter board, and a conventional audio box); 4) can be used as a terminal to the resident HIS or as a stand-alone system; or, remotely, through a telephone-answering device.
